To lai lo!

This morning, I almost felt sorry for the several envelopes full of teaching materials that rested beside my bed. It might be a while before I get to use them again. My student right now cares more for grammar than writing, and the one I'll be meeting tomorrow would probably be the same.

I think I've recently experienced something I'd, for lack of a better term, call "foreign language fatigue". For my part-time job I teach both English and 日本語, the former to a 日本人 who will be taking up her secondary education in the Philippines, and the later to Filipinos who want to learn basic 日本語 just for the heck of it. My 日本語 has suffered greatly because of the English language tutorials we have everyday. Even if she sometimes talks to me in her native tongue, and thank goodness I can still get the gist of what she says, my brain finds it rather diffficult to form coherent sentences in 日本語.

I had a 7 year old student once, Yukari, another 日本人 whose mother wanted her to learn English in preparation for entering grade school in the country, and she only knew the usual salutations in English and the Roman Alphabet. I had to talk to her in 日本語 and translate what I was saying in English. She repeated after me in the beginning, but there came a time when she refused to learn anything foreign. It seemed her entire system found English revolting and wouldn't let herself use it at all. Needless to say, I felt it useless to make her talk in English, even if her "no" and "I don't understand" seemed almost like how an English-speaking Filipino would say them. Sometimes I feel like Yukari, I don't want to speak or hear anyone talk in a language other than the two that I grew up with. Still, sometimes I get frustrated when my other 日本人 student refuses to take in as much information as she needs to be able to speak in, at least, semi-halting, perfectly tensed English when her father comes to visit her and her mother from Japan.

Right now my brain is a hodge-podge of Mandarin, Fookien, 日本語 and whatever else language patterns I've consciously or unconsciously taken into my system in the last 10 years. My R's, however little they've recovered after high school French lessons, are now forever ruined by Mandarin, and it's all I can do to mimic the crispy R's of 日本語. I hope I don't end up speaking Filipino the bloody way young people do these days.

Hippie
You are 42% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 28% Brutal, and 28% Arrogant.

You are the Hippie! Characterized by a strong sense of extroversion,
irrationality, gentleness, and humility, you no doubt frolic through
fields preaching peace and love to all! You are probably either very
spiritual or needlessly paranoid about "the man", like most hippies, as
a result of your focus on intuition and feelings over cold, brutal
logic. You are also very, very social. And like any hippie, who would
have no qualms about hitchiking across the country just to meet some
interesting people, you too love to interact with others, even complete
strangers. Because we know most any hippie is peace-loving and humble,
it stands to reason that you, as well, are terribly gentle and humble,
almost to the point of revulsion. Your carefree attitude of peace and
harmony is probably very, very sickening to realists or cynics or
anyone who isn't a hippie, to tell the truth. In short, your
personality is defective because you are overly emotional, extroverted,
gentle, and humble--thus making you an annoying hippie. And you listen
to psychadelic rock and smoke a whole lot of pot. Okay, maybe not, but
I wouldn't be surprised if you did.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more INTUITIVE than rational.

2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Sociopath.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Televangelist, and the Robot.

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you
could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42%
Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is
close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well.
Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can
determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored
near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.
